Digital licence or product key?
Windows has two forms of activation. With a digital licence, the entitlement for your hardware is stored with Microsoft, for example after a free upgrade from an activated Windows 10 to Windows 11. After a clean installation on the same device, Windows then activates automatically as soon as it is online.
A product key is a 25-character code in the format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. You need one for a new or self-built PC, when switching from Home to Pro or if no digital licence is available. Method 1: Activating Windows 11 via Settings
- On Windows 11, open Settings → System → Activation. On Windows 10, the path is Settings → Update & Security → Activation.
- Next to “Change product key”, click “Change”.
- Enter the 25-character key. Windows adds the hyphens itself.
- Confirm with “Next” and then “Activate”.
- Once the check is successful, the page shows the status “Active” or “Windows is activated”.
The “Activation” page is also where you can see the current status and the installed edition at any time.
Method 2: Activation during installation
During installation, setup asks for the product key. If you enter it there, Windows automatically installs the matching edition and activates itself after setup as soon as an internet connection is available.

Method 3: Activation by command with slmgr
The Windows tool slmgr is useful if Settings hangs or if you are setting up several computers. To use it, open Command Prompt as an administrator: open the Start menu, type “cmd”, right-click “Command Prompt” and select “Run as administrator”.
- Install the key (replace the Xs with your key):

Phone activation
If online activation fails even though the key is correct, phone activation is the next step. Press the Windows key + R, enter slui 4 and confirm. Select your country. Windows then displays an installation ID and the further steps. You then enter the confirmation ID you receive in return in the fields provided.

Activation after a hardware change
After replacing the motherboard, Windows often no longer recognises the device. If you previously linked the digital licence to your Microsoft account, proceed as follows:
- Open Settings → System → Activation and select “Troubleshoot” (Windows 10: Settings → Update & Security → Activation → Troubleshoot).
- Select the option stating that you recently changed hardware on this device.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account and select the device you are currently using.

Beware of unofficial activation tools
Programs and scripts that claim to unlock Windows without a valid licence are offered online. We strongly advise against them. Such tools breach the licence terms, often contain malware and interfere deeply with the system. The activation can be lost again at any time.
