Windows 10 Home or Pro: the differences

Home covers everything most home users need: internet, Office programs, photos, gaming and streaming. Pro adds features for encryption, virtualisation and network management.

As a rule of thumb: if you want to encrypt data on your laptop, access the PC via Remote Desktop, run virtual machines or integrate the computer into a company network, you need Pro. For everyone else, Home is enough.

Switching later is easy. You can move from Home to Pro without reinstalling by entering a Pro key under Settings → Update & Security → Activation → “Change product key”. Going the other way, from Pro to Home, requires a clean installation.

From a Windows 10 key to Windows 11

Many people ask whether a Windows 10 key also works for Windows 11. For the upgrade, the rule is: if the PC meets the requirements, an activated Windows 10 licence is carried over during the free upgrade. Home becomes Home, Pro becomes Pro.

Even with a clean installation of Windows 11, setup in practice generally accepts a Windows 10 key of the same edition. The prerequisite is always that the hardware is suitable for Windows 11. On an incompatible PC, even a valid key does not change the system requirements.

1. Choose the right edition: The key must match the installed edition. A Home key does not activate Pro, and vice versa.
