Microsoft Project 2016 Standard for learning, club work and simple planning

Microsoft Project 2016 Standard is the single-user edition of Microsoft Project from the 2016 release. It is installed as a standalone application on Windows and is not included in Office. Microsoft ended support for this version on 14 October 2025, which we expressly point out.

The version plays to its strengths where basic project planning is concerned: students and participants in project management courses use it to learn about network diagrams, critical paths and bar charts. Clubs plan their summer party or the renovation of the clubhouse, and volunteers allocate tasks and keep track of deadlines. As Project 2016 has lower hardware requirements, it also copes with older computers.

Standard 2016, Professional or a later release?

Professional adds features for organisations: Team Planner, resource planning across multiple projects, connection to Project Server and Skype for Business presence. For learning and manageable projects, these tools are hardly needed. The basic principles of planning are the same in all releases, so what you learn remains applicable in Project 2021 or 2024. If you want to use the software in a business, 2024 is the better choice because of its support.

Support period

Since 14 October 2025, Microsoft has no longer provided security updates for Project 2016. The software continues to work, and your licence does not expire. For learning and practice purposes or a computer without sensitive data, this is usually not a problem; in business use, you should weigh up the end of support carefully.

How purchase and activation work

• Order: Once payment has been received, the licence key with instructions is sent by email, usually within a few minutes.
• Install: Download the installation files from Microsoft or via our download link.
• Activate: Enter the key and activate online with the manufacturer, in some cases by phone. We can help by email at info@keychannel.de and, on request, via remote support.
