Office 2021 or 2024: which version is still worth it in 2026?

Office 2021 or 2024: both are one-off purchase versions without a subscription and at first glance hardly distinguishable. In 2026 the deciding factor is above all a date, because support for Office 2021 ends on 13 October 2026. This comparison shows the differences in support, programs and features and explains who Office 2021 is still good enough for.

Office 2021 and 2024 side by side

Technically, the two versions are closely related. Internally they share the same major version number 16.0, use the same file formats and are installed and activated in the same way. The differences lie in support period, range of programs and feature details.

The decisive difference: end of support

Both versions are subject to Microsoft's Fixed Lifecycle Policy: five years of mainstream support, with no extended support afterwards. There is no extension programme for Office 2021 like the ESU for Windows 10. Microsoft confirms the date in the lifecycle announcement for Office 2021.

After 13 October 2026, Office 2021 will still start and your files will remain usable. However, Microsoft will no longer close newly discovered security vulnerabilities. This matters more for Office than for many other programs, because Word, Excel and Outlook open files from external sources every day: email attachments, downloads, documents from customers. Manipulated Office documents are a common method of attack.

Then there is the simple arithmetic: if you buy Office 2021 new now, you get practically no remaining support period. Office 2024, by contrast, will receive updates for around three more years. All the dates for Office, Project and Visio are listed in the overview Office end of support.

Programs and editions: what has changed

Publisher is dropped

Office 2021 is the last one-off purchase version with Publisher. Microsoft is discontinuing the program: after October 2026, Publisher will no longer be supported and will also be removed from Microsoft 365. Publisher 2021 will still start but, like the rest of Office 2021, will no longer receive updates.

If you have Publisher files in .pub format, you should save them as PDFs in good time or transfer the content to another program. Access, Outlook and Skype for Business

The same applies to both versions: Professional Plus includes Access, Standard does not. Outlook is included in both editions of both versions. Skype for Business is part of Professional Plus 2021 and can optionally be installed with 2024. The client is now only relevant for companies running their own Skype for Business server. New features in Office 2024

Compared with Office 2021, Office 2024 mainly brings useful detailed improvements:

• Excel: new text and array functions such as TEXTSPLIT and VSTACK, as well as the IMAGE function for pictures in cells.
• PowerPoint and Word: Cameo and Recording Studio for presentations, session recovery in Word.
• All programs: a more modern default design, improved accessibility and support for ODF 1.4.

To put this into perspective: Office 2021 already supports XLOOKUP, dynamic arrays and the LET function. If you mainly use these tools, you are not fundamentally worse off with Office 2021. Who Office 2021 is still good enough for

Despite the imminent end of support, there are situations in which Office 2021 is justifiable:

• Computers without an internet connection: A PC that never goes online, for example one attached to a machine or in an isolated laboratory, is hardly exposed to attacks via email or the web. Missing updates matter less there.
• Existing installations in transition: If you already use Office 2021, you do not have to switch overnight after 13 October 2026. But plan the move soon, ideally together with a new PC or the switch to Windows 11.
• Publisher users who need to migrate: If you still have to edit Publisher files, you can use Office 2021 for a limited transition period, but you should tackle the migration now.
• Specialist applications tied to a version: Some industry software or add-ins are approved by the vendor only for certain Office versions. In this case, ask the vendor whether Office 2024 is supported.

For a new purchase in 2026, these are exceptions. In all other cases, Office 2024 gives you three extra years of security updates and a more up-to-date feature set.

Our recommendation

If you are buying new today, go for Office 2024. If you need Access, choose Professional Plus; otherwise Standard is sufficient. Office 2021 is only worth considering if one of the special cases above applies to you and you knowingly accept the end of support.
